Do you need a battery installed to kick start a moped?

I'm beginning to diagnose a no-spark issue on a 1978 Honda moped. It's a kick start model. Will I need a fully charged battery to get spark from it? I just picked it up and I have the battery, but don't know how old it is, etc. Also is this a 6v or 12v system? Any advice would be great, thanks for any help in advance.Do you need a battery installed to kick start a moped? Most mopeds have simple magneto style ignition systems that do not require a battery, but, without a look at the wiring diagram for whatever model you have I can't say for sure. Being that it is a 78 it no doubt has points, so, the first thing to do is to see if they are opening and closing. Regarding the battery, should say right on the side 6v or 12v, but if not, 3 caps = 6v and 6 caps = 12v.Do you need a battery installed to kick start a moped?Well you should be able to take the spark plug out, connect it to the L shaped ( can't remember the name of it ) plug.

Put the spark plug connected on the ground, and use the kick start to see if the spark plug sparks.

You shouldn't need a battery to start your moped as far as I know.
