How should I treat my laptop battery to keep it working a long time?

I just got a new laptop and I heard that one should remove the battery when the computer is plugged in to keep the battery from dying quickly. In my old laptop I left the battery in all the time, I don't think I ever removed it.

Should I remove the battery when I have the computer plugged in? Should I just keep the battery in the computer all the time? Is there a difference? How should I treat my laptop battery to keep it working a long time? You should keep the battery in and the laptop plugged in to a power outlet whenever possible. The Old Computer GuyHow should I treat my laptop battery to keep it working a long time?Laptop batteries go to half life after a year's use. If you use an adaptor for the most part, you could remove the battery and use it only when you are not able to use your adaptor...that will likely extend it's life.

If you use your battery, then make sure you enable standby in your power settings so that the battery is not using as much power when idle.

Where I worked, we purchased 2 batteries each for our reps who needed to use their laptops throughout the day.... they were too busy to shut down their laptops while working. We also asked them to shut down at least once a day so that standby use would not be too easy to use hence having sluggish computer problems later during the week.

Knowing this, I upgraded my own laptop to have a 9 cell battery as opposed to the standard 6 cell... and I use the adaptor as much as possible. How should I treat my laptop battery to keep it working a long time? When you first get your battery and charge it for the first time, make sure you wait until the battery is charged completely. While this was especially true of the older batteries which were more susceptible to developing battery memory (holding less charge than it should because it wasn't charged fully), it will not be a bad idea to treat the newer batteries the same as well.

Avoid leaving your notebook computer plugged into an AC adapter 24/7. Many computer companies like Apple say ideally you want to discharge your battery once a month.

If you need to store your battery over a long period time, try to discharge it until it is around 50% charged. Then take it out and store it somewhere safe. You do not want to store it somewhere with a lot of humidity. Nor would you want to keep it somewhere that is very hot or very cold. How should I treat my laptop battery to keep it working a long time? You should remove it when you use the power outlet as main power supply.

It will save your battery life.

If you don't mind it, leave it all them time.

In fact, most people leave it.
