AA alkalines are not designed for %26quot;high drain%26quot; devices like digital cameras. They have ridiculously short life spans. NiMH rechargeables don't mind being in high drain devices, and won't die as quickly.
2) Get NiMH rechargeable batteries. I'm presuming your camera takes AA batteries. A good set of batteries and a charger will cost you about $20. So about 3 or 4 charges will pay back the cost of the batteries and charger. Look for NiMH AA's with a rating of 2200 milliamp-hours (2200 mAh) or better.

One set is in the camera and one is on the charger. When the ones in the camera go dead, I have ready replacements standing by. It's a cycle of recharging one set while using the other set.
You can also limit use of the little LCD screen. This tends to drain the batteries quicker than using the viewfinder.
