Just got a new HP Laptop, brand new, with windows Vista. The first time I used the whole battery, the battery died, and the machine just shut off and lost all of my data. My old laptop would hibernate when the battery died (saving all my data). How do I change this setting? Is there something wrong with my laptop?

How do you jumpstart a car if the battery dies on you?
I think I know how but never did it before.
You have a second car running and you put the red jump cable on the positive side and the black cable on the negative side. Then with the red cable hooks up to the positive side of the dead battery. And the black cable hooks up to the negative side of the dead battery.
Is that correct? Cause I've heard if you hook it up wrong something can catch on fire???????

Is there a way, without buying a new battery or charger first, to know if its that battery that is bad, or the charging system is bad. you will read a voltage, it should be less than .05. if it more than that, next start unplugging the fuses, until you get a 0 or .05. look at what fuse you unplugged, now you know the offending circuit. a little more detective work you got it. The only way to figure out the problem is by process of elimination. You have a short somewhere or perhaps a defective switch that allows power to drain from your battery. While you do this, look at all of the exterior lights to see if any flicker, or appear dimmer or brighter than the others do. If you find one that appears odd, replace it and see if this resolves the problem. Check your fog lights too!
Remove one of the fuses listed below and leave it out overnight. Try to crank your car. If the car starts, you have found your problem. If the car fails to start, move to the next fuse on the list. Disconnect the negative side of the battery, turn on you meter put the red lead to the battery, the black to the cable end. meter should be set for reading mil amps.
you will read a voltage, it should be less than .05. if it more than that, next start unplugging the fuses, until you get a 0 or .05. look at what fuse you unplugged, now you know the offending circuit. a little more detective work you got it. The only way to figure out the problem is by process of elimination. You have a short somewhere or perhaps a defective switch that allows power to drain from your battery. If you have added anything to the car in the past month or two, remove that to see if your problem resolves. If not, you must systematically rule out each of the electrical systems in your car. Get familiar with your fuse box, as removing the fuse works best for isolating each system. Read your owner’s-manual to determine if you need to avoid removing some fuses.
Before you start this process, spend some time looking for bare wires, melted or charred insulation on wires, loose ground connections, obvious burn marks where current jumped between a wire and the car chassis, and anything else that looks wrong. Try this with the car off, and then try again with the car running and all of the accessories running on high. Listen for a sizzling sound as you do this part. Watch your hair, loose clothing, fingers, etc., around the moving parts under the hood. While you do this, look at all of the exterior lights to see if any flicker, or appear dimmer or brighter than the others do. If you find one that appears odd, replace it and see if this resolves the problem. Check your fog lights too!
Remove one of the fuses listed below and leave it out overnight. Try to crank your car. If the car starts, you have found your problem. If the car fails to start, move to the next fuse on the list. Oh, and remember to reinstall the fuse you removed before moving to the next fuse. Remember to remove only one fuse per day, otherwise you may not give the problem time to drain your battery.

Repair the head gasket requires taking the engine apart, and while it is apart other problems could be found. I have a '01 pontiac grand prix, the positive terminal on the battery has completely corroded and broken off. I am unable to unscrew the positive cable to reattach it to a new battery so I bought a new one. My question is how do I change that positive wire? A battery is a kind of stored power, but the total amount of this power is limited by the chemical process. Once the chemical process is completed, there is no more potential to provide power.
First, power is voltage times current. But since you have not given the voltage, I will address the current issue.
You want to be able to get 1/120th of an an hour of current at 60 amps, or 500 milli-amp hours of current from your battery. Depending on the battery, that may be possible, but you would not get that from, say a AA battery.
The next problem is the speed at which the battery is able to produce this current. You say that it can produce 1.35 amperes at its maximum. But after a few seconds, you will find that that rate of power begins to drop and will continue to drop until the battery is exhausted.
If the battery could produce enough total current, it would take perhaps an hour or three to get it out. Even if it could manage to sustain its high output rate, it would take (.5 / 1.35) about 22 minutes to collect it.
As the other respondent mentioned, if you COULD collect it, if there was enough current in the battery, you could store it using a capacitor. You would charge the capacitor over the time it took to achieve enough stored current in the capacitor to provide the 60 amperes for 30 seconds, then discharge the capacitor through whatever device you wanted it for. Of course, you would need a capacitor large enough to provide that amount of current.
The equation is watts = voltage * current = 1/2 * voltage *( the size of the capacitor in farads)
From that you can see that current = 1/2 * capacitance in Farads.
So the capacitor has to be 120 farads. That is a HUGE capacitance, and while you can now get them in quite compact forms, they are pricey. I do not think you can get a total of 60 farads of capacitance for under 1,400 pounds/ 2,000 dollars!.
The last problem is that capacitors are not perfect storage devices. They always have some 'leakage' - they leak over time, and since you would need a lot of time, there would be a significant current/power loss. Which means you would need 'extra' power from the battery and a surplus of capacitance.
In sum, I think that you have set yourself a difficult task!
