How do you make a battery to hold energy from a generator?

For a project, we've made a generator. How would we make a battery to hold the energy it porduces, so that we can use it later? It needs to be homemade, we can't buy one in the store.How do you make a battery to hold energy from a generator?The chemicals in a battery can be dangerous. And difficult to obtain.
